2017 Focus Areas

by Rita Nguyen

According to my Facebook feed, 2016 was the worst year ever and everyone is happy to see the end of it. While I agree that there were quite a few difficult times globally, personally 2016 was one of the best years I’ve had in a very long time.

I don’t do New Year resolutions but I do try to have a few key focus areas for the year ahead. I went into 2016 with the goals of trying to make easier decisions for myself as well as try to live a more balanced life, no small feat for an entrepreneur. While it wasn’t perfect, I am very happy as I look at 2016 through the rear view mirror. This past year was probably less transformative than the past few years but I have finally found the space to settle back into “me”. Something that I really struggled with since moving to Myanmar and starting my first company – not to mention all the ensuing dramas.

So what’s on deck for 2017? Sounds boring but I’m going to say more of the same. I also need to get better at letting shit go. Meaning I don’t have to be at zero inbox or feel bad when I say no. Even low time commitment requests have an opportunity cost and I shouldn’t feel bad about wanting the extra 2 hours of sleep versus yet another networking/mentoring/industry event. Plus I’m old and need those 2 hours!

This year I’m also going focus my time on tackling some bucket list items as well as getting rid of others. Personal development things like guitar and picking up a third language are high on my 2017 list. Things like having a 6 pack have just got to be stricken off as “ain’t gonna happen”.

While 2016 was good, I am happy to have the fresh new canvas that is 2017. There’s much to look forward to and I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us.

Happy New Year!
